In 2023, the Centre for International Security received an endowment by the US-based Stanton Foundation. The Stanton Foundation has supported the centre since 2018. After the successful completion of a second project phase in 2023, the Stanton Foundation has decided to further strengthen its support to the centre. This generous support enables the Centre to build a European hub for research on nuclear security challenges and contribute to a stronger European voice in the global debate on nuclear security. The endowment will benefit three pillars at the centre: research, teaching, and outreach. The project is a joint endeavour with the Munich Security Conference (MSC), the world’s leading forum on international security and a long-standing partner of the Centre for International Security.
The endowment enables the Centre to undertake research in the following three research areas:
- Research Area I: European nuclear strategy and doctrine in an age of great power competition
- Research Area II: European societal interests and needs for extended deterrence and assurance
- Research Area III: Managing assurance and extended deterrence in NATO in the post-2022 nuclear environment
Key Activities:

Together with our project partner the MSC, we host off-the-record discussion on nuclear security themes and larger roundtables with high-level speakers on the most pressing nuclear issues on the margins of the annual Munich Security Conference. In 2024, we co-hosted a side-event together with the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs at the John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) focusing on the implications of Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine on nuclear policy.

Every year, we host an international nuclear security workshop at the Hertie School that brings together scholars from around the world. The next workshop will take place on July 15-16. You will find the Call for Papers here.

In 2024, we co-founded the European Nuclear Study Group together with the University of St. Gallen‘s Institute of Political Science and the Munich Security Conference (MSC). The group seeks to bring together scholars and practitioners to focus on the implications of the changing nuclear order for Europe and strategic doctrine, nuclear modernization, arms control, and transatlantic cooperation.

About the Stanton Foundation:
The Stanton Foundation is a US-based private foundation established by Frank Stanton, a long-time president of Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) and an adviser on nuclear issues to President Eisenhower in the 1950s. One of its key areas of focus is supporting policy research in international security with a special emphasis on nuclear security.
