How to engage your audience confidently in virtual presentations and online interviews

Virtual presentations and online interviews are here to stay, so let's evaluate your online presence and prepare it for success in any professional setting. These skills may sound simple but there is a lot to think about – making this is a wonderful opportunity to practice techniques in a constructive and supportive context. 

In these 2x 2-hour sessions you will discover practical skills to develop and improve your virtual presentations and online interview skills. We will focus on how to present ourselves with effective eye contact, body language,voice and microphone techniques. 

This workshop is organised within the framework of CIVICA – The European University of Social Sciences

How does this course work

This practical, interactive course which consists of two sessions of two hours each comprises hands-on activities and mini lectures, focusing on effective voice and body language techniques, as well as how to use a microphone and where to look on the monitor. The goal is for you to develop confidence and the skills needed for successful virtual presentations, online interviews and meetings in a professional setting. 

Day 1:

In the firts session we will discover and practice:

  • Voice and breathing exercises to warm-up our voice and to decrease nerves.
  • How and why to be aware of the importance of clear distinction, as well as using an appropriate speed for your listeners.
  • The application of speaking and reading skills to brief activities in small groups with constructive feedback from peers and the session leader.

Day 2

In the second session we will discover and practice:

  • Effective body language including eye contact, where to focus on the monitor, as well as gestures. 
  • Application and prcatice of body language skills, eye contcat and gestures for presenting and interviewing in small groups, with constructive feedback from peers and the session leader.
  • Discussion: Best practices when speaking or presenting virtually; voice and eye contact, troubleshooting issues.

Participants are encouraged to ask questions or for clarification when needed. Please have any book or textbook in your main subject available during both sessions to practice reading aloud.

Instructor

  • Jo Tomalin is Professor of Theatre Arts at San Francisco State University where she teaches acting, voice skills, voice-over techniques, storytelling and movement. She is also a stage director, a theatre reviewer in the USA and the UK and has taught voice-over skills at Pixar Animation Studios in California. Jo trained at École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris, where she obtained a Certificat Professionnel and completed the Laboratoire d'Etude du Mouvement (Physical Acting, Masks, Movement, Scenography);  Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, RADA, London (Classical Acting and Voice); Trinity College of Dramatic Art, London, ATCL, (Classical Acting and Voice); Goldsmith's College, University of London, UK, Teaching Credential (Education, Laban Movement Analysis and Choreography); PhD Capella University, (Education with a specialist in Instructional Design for Online Learning).
