Rapid transformation in the Asia-Pacific region is driving changes in the West’s relationship with Asia. Global challenges, the digital economy, shifting demographics and the rise of China are creating new opportunities and strategic stress points. Today, the Asia-Pacific region is connected to – and impacts – the Atlantic partnership as never before, while East Asians struggle to develop a common identity and functioning institutions.

America’s top diplomat for the Asia-Pacific region spoke on how to understand these regional trends and what the United States is doing, together with Europeans and other partners, to shape a future that promotes prosperity, preserves security, and advances shared values.
