PhD researcher Juan Auz co-authors report that was presented to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights
Fifteen national and regional organisations from more than nine countries in the Americas have published a report presented in September 2019 in a public hearing before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Their findings highlight the impact of the climate crisis on the rights of groups in vulnerable situations, including indigenous peoples, women, children and rural communities.
The report, which covers all the arguments raised during the public hearing, has now been published in collaboration with the Heinrich Böll Foundation. Co-authored by Juan Auz, PhD researcher at the Centre for Fundamental Rights, the report presents an overview of cases illustrating how a set of rights are being affected by the climate crisis. It also underscores the duties of states and non-state actors in protecting and respecting those rights.
A compilation of the latest doctrinal, legislative, public policy and scientific aspects in the field, the report aims to guide decision-makers and civil society actors in fostering climate action from a human rights perspective. According to Auz, “This is a modest contribution to the advancement of climate justice from and for the Global South. It also invites us to reflect on the need for a collaborative and coordinated approach to face the challenges of the so-called Anthropocene.”
