Student Advisory Board

The Student Advisory Board of the Centre for Fundamental Rights is an independent student body that acts as a link between the Centre and the students of the Hertie School. The Student Advisory Board organises student-led events and provides advice on programming, events and other activities hosted by the Centre.

Members of the Student Advisory Board for the academic year 2023/2024: 

Luis Barrueto is a first year MPP student at the Hertie School. He has a background in communications and has worked on human rights initiatives in the Americas, focusing on gender equality and access to justice. He has a masters in media and globalisation from Aarhus University and City University London. He founded Visibles, an LGBTIQ advocacy organisation in Guatemala.

Ilka Bartsch is a second year MPP student at the Hertie School. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations and has work experience with the German government and civil society organisations in the fields of international labour standards, women’s rights and access to justice. She has previously lived in Romania, the Netherlands, Spain and France and is especially interested in labor and social rights, as well as the protection of rights of marginalised groups.

Diana Bernardini is a first year MIA student at the Hertie School. She has a LL.B in European and International Law from the University of Maastricht, with a minor in International Development Studies from the University of Amsterdam and experience in managing a non-profit organisation as well as a researcher on internet freedom and censorship. She is interested in the interconnections between the climate crisis, climate justice, migration and screening processes at the borders from a human rights perspective. 

Christine Cepelak is a MPP candidate at the Hertie School. Currently working on digital governance and tech policy, she holds a Bachelor’s in International Political Economy. After working for nearly 10 years on social impact and data initiatives in the US, she hopes to focus on policy responses to global challenges impacting marginalised people. As part of the Student Advisory Board, she hopes to engage with human rights challenges from emerging technologies.

Embla Elde is a first year MIA student at the Hertie School. She has a BA in International Studies from the University of Oslo, where she specialised in International Law. She has experience in organisational and communications work for international youth organisations, and in project management for projects facilitating Arctic-European youth cooperation. Her main areas of interest are European human rights law and criminal justice, as well as European-Arctic relations and Arctic governance. 

Jawahar Fatiema is a MIA candidate at the Hertie School with a focus on Human Rights and Global Governance. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from National University of Sciences and Technology in Pakistan. She has been working for the Human Rights machinery through the National Commission for Human Rights in Pakistan for the past three years. 

Ana Carolina Fisher is a second year MIA student at the Hertie School. She has a Bachelor’s in Law from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro and an LL.M. in International and Comparative Law with a focus on Human Rights from the George Washington University. She has conducted research for several organisations on topics including the incarceration of migrant children, economic empowerment of women in the Americas, and policies and legislation on paternity and division of unpaid care work. 

Anouschka Kuschnerus has completed a Bachelor in Global law at the Tilburg Law school and is now a MIA candidate with a focus on Human Rights and Global Governance at the Hertie School. She is passionate about topics that relate to Migration and human security, and their interconnectedness. She participated in a program called ‘the diverse perspectives of migration’ where she conducted a research on the rights of children in EU asylum procedures.

Nina Wunderlich is a first year MPP student at the Hertie School with a Bachelor’s in Political Science and Law from the University of Münster. During her undergraduate studies, she specialised in International Law and Human Rights, and participated in the 2022 National Model United Nations Conference in New York. Nina is passionate about access to justice, strategic litigation, LGBTQIA+ and women’s’ rights.
