The AI and digital ethics expert says it is not game over for the emergence of competing foundational AI models.
At IFA2023 in Berlin, one of Europe's largest tech conferences, generative AI took centre stage with discussions on its vast potential and the significant funding it has attracted recently.
In remarks to Moneycontrol, Joanna Bryson, Professor of Ethics and Technology at the Hertie School, Berlin, emphasised the potential for innovation beyond the dominant foundation models of companies like OpenAI. She made these comments in reaction to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's remarks in June 2023 suggesting that competing with OpenAI on foundation models would be "hopeless". Dr. Bryson countered, “I don’t think it’s game over. Some amazing things are being done with much smaller (AI) models." She noted the potential of countries like India to innovate, driven by their rich diversity and knowledge base. Highlighting the innovative strides in low-energy tech from African countries, Bryson asserted, "I am sure India will also be doing these scaled innovations and shouldn’t let anyone shut them down.”
This comes on the heels of India's Reliance Jio and Tata Communications announcing their collaboration with Nvidia to develop AI infrastructure and foundational models in Indian languages.
