Pole dancing against the algorithm

A presentation by Dr. Carolina Are (Northumbria University). This event is part of the Digital Governance Research Colloquium hosted by the Centre for Digital Governance.

In this talk, Dr. Carolina Are will discuss social media censorship of nudity, its relationship with the patriarchy and with whorephobia, sharing some insights from her latest studies on shadowbanning, de-platforming and mass reporting of sex workers and LGBTQIA+ activists. You'll leave this talk with new ideas about what pole dancing can teach tech companies about content governance as well as with tips, gossip and concerns about Big Tech's power over our bodies.

Dr. Carolina Are (a.k.a. @bloggeronpole) is a London-based Italian researcher, activist and blogger with a PhD in content moderation. An Innovation Fellow at Northumbria University’s Centre for Digital Citizens, Carolina is currently leading a project at the intersection between online abuse and online censorship, which she has experienced both as an academic and as a social media creator herself.
