Careers in Digital Governance: Development through digitalisation

Join us for an exciting exploration of careers in development through digitalisation with Eva Hoermann (European Commission) and Shweta Nawani (UNDP), moderated by Prof. Gerhard Hammerschmid (Hertie School).

In an era defined by the profound impact of digital transformation, we stand at the crossroads of opportunities and challenges to shape the landscape of development cooperation and chart a course towards achieving of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Today, development cooperation is armed with a wide range of digital technologies and data, offering a variety of tools to enhance its work. These transformative tools facilitate the advancement of digital development in partner countries. They enable us to tackle key initiatives, such as promoting digital literacy and driving digital transformation in government and the private sector, among others, to make a positive impact on global development.

Joining this enlightening discussion are: Eva Hoermann, International Relations Officer at the European Commission, Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG Connect), Shweta Nawani, People Development Analyst at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). They will explore the multifaceted dimensions of digital governance and its pivotal role in shaping a more sustainable, efficient, and inclusive future towards the SDGs. 

The event will be moderated by Prof. Gerhard Hammerschmid, Professor of Public and Financial Management at the Hertie School.

Speakers

  • Eva Hoermann is an International Relations Officer at the European Commission, Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG Connect). She works in the Unit for Policy Outreach and International Affairs. In this role, she follows the international dimension of the European digital market and policy. She contributes to advancing digital cooperation with countries of the Global South and UN/Multilateral Organizations. Previously, Eva worked with GIZ, advising BMZ on digital for development (D4D) and implementing the D4D Hub. The D4D Hub is a multi-stakeholder instrument for digital partnerships between Europe and Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. Prior to this, she gained experience with the German Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs and UNDP. She holds a Master of Public Policy with a focus on policy analysis from Hertie School, Berlin, and a Master of Public Administration with a focus on economic and political development, data analysis and management from Columbia University, New York. 

  • Shweta Nawani is the People Development Analyst at United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). She brings together years of experience in learning and training, business and technology to design and deliver human-centred learning experiences for UN personnel. She currently works in the Talent Development Unit of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Copenhagen and has previously worked at the UN System Staff College (UNSSC) in Bonn. In her role in talent development, she specialises on identifying and addressing UNDP’s organisational learning needs by delivering transformative talent development initiatives and supporting strategic processes around people development and culture. Shweta is currently on a special assignment with the Directorate of the Office of Human Resources in New York. As a former entrepreneur, Shweta leverages her experience in the private sector to design and facilitate engaging learning experiences with a sharp client focus.

Moderator

  • Gerhard Hammerschmid is Professor of Public and Financial Management at the Hertie School. His research focuses on public management reform, comparative public administration, public sector performance management and how digitalisation is affecting government. He also serves as Academic Head at the Institut für den öffentlichen Sektor e.V. (www.publicgovernance.de) and is a coordinator and partner of various EU-funded research projects (COCOPS, LIPSE, EUPACK, TROPICO) on public sector innovation and digital government transformation. He has been a guest professor at the Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG) and the Copenhagen Business School. Before joining the Hertie School he was Assistant Professor with the Institute for Public Management at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Wien) and spent three years in a Federal Ministry in Austria coordinating a major restructuring and administrative reform. He studied business at the University of St. Gallen and received his PhD from WU Wien. He also has more than 20 years of experience in communicating research findings to high-level government officials and policymakers such as the EUPAN network, or more recently, the European Commission's Inter-service group on Public Administration.
