Research event

Artificial intelligence and bureaucratic transformation

A presentation by Dr. Keegan McBride (University of Oxford). This event is part of the Digital Governance Research Colloquium hosted by the Centre for Digital Governance.

For many governments, digitalizing their bureaucracies has become an important goal; digitalization is viewed as an essential aspect of becoming a better government that is more effective and efficient. Increasingly, AI is becoming a critical component of such digitalization initiatives. While some have hypothesized that AI may do away with the state or bureaucracy, rather the opposite is true: bureaucracy and the state will be strengthened by AI. However, structural changes are likely to occur. In this talk, Dr. Keegan McBride will discuss these changes and present an overview of his new research project “Bureaucracy and Artificial Intelligence – An Institutional Logics Exploration of Digital Transformation”.

Dr. Keegan McBride is based at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford where he works as a Lecturer in AI, Government, and Policy and as the Course Director for the MSc Social Science of the Internet Program. At the University of Oxford, his research is focused on understanding the new and emerging disruptive technologies are transforming our understanding of the state.
