International women's day keynote and discussion

Canadian Justice Minister and Attorney-General Jody Wilson-Raybould will discuss key Canadian themes and debates pertaining to international women’s day. These include the initiative “It’s time”, and legal reforms under way in Canada intended to improve the lives of women. The Minister will also speak to broader themes of inclusion and diversity, including in relation to Indigenous peoples. In Canada, this year’s theme for 8 March is “My feminism”, drawing attention to women’s individual pathways and experiences. Against this background, she will also provide insights into her personal feminist biography.

Keynote speaker

Jody Wilson-Raybould is a lawyer, advocate, and leader among British Columbia’s First Nations. As a former Regional Chief of the BC Assembly of First Nations, Jody brings extensive experience in law, public service, and First Nations governance to Cabinet. She was sworn-in as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on November 4, 2015. She is an elected member of parliament and represents the federal riding of Vancouver-Granville in British Columbia.  She is an elected member of parliament and represents the federal riding of Vancouver-Granville in British Columbia. Since being elected Regional Chief of the BC Assembly of First Nations in 2009, Jody has devoted herself to the advancement of First Nations governance, fair access to land and resources, as well as improved education and health care services. Jody is a descendant of the Musgamagw Tsawataineuk and Laich-Kwil-Tach peoples, which are part of the Kwakwaka’wakw and also known as the Kwak’wala speaking peoples. She is a member of the We Wai Kai Nation and is married to Dr. Tim Raybould.

Chair

Başak Çalı is Professor of International Law at the Hertie School and Director of the Center for Global Public Law at Koç University, Istanbul. Her research interests are international law, human rights law, and the prospects of global public law in a multi-level legal order. Çali is the Secretary General of the European Society of International Law, Editor-in-Chief of Oxford University Press United Nations Human Rights Case-Law Reports, a Fellow of the Human Rights Centre of the University of Essex and a Senior Research Fellow at the Pluricourts Centre at the University of Oslo.

Helmut K. Anheier is President of the Hertie School and Professor of Sociology. His research centres on indicator systems, social innovation, culture, philanthropy, and organisational studies. He also holds a Chair of Sociology at Heidelberg University and serves as Academic Director of the Centre for Social Investment.
