Master of Public Policy

Movements, campaigns and politics: From an idea to societal change

This course is about how to make societal change happen. Is there anything that really bugs you in your society or community? Anything that you think could be improved upon? Do you feel powerless in the face of the immensity of the task of changing what you have identified as flawed? I would like to take you on a journey. A journey from finding societal issues you care about, through understanding how to tackle them, to planning everything out in detail. My goal is for you to walk out of this project course and have the ability to go all in on starting a new campaign, an NGO, a movement, party or whatever you have in mind, that works to solve the issue you have identified. I am not an academic professor, so don’t expect to learn the best state-of-the-art frameworks within this class. What I would like to strengthen within you is the drive to try outrageous things and the analytical rigor to think them through before you do it. In the class you will hear from a range of practitioners, hopefully from Momentum (a political movement and party in Hungary), #LeaveNoOneBehind (an asylum campaign) and FridaysForFuture. We will find inspiration from their stories as well as discuss their organisational choices and leadership styles. At the end of the course, you will hold the perfect strategy for turning the changes you envision into reality. If you are ambitious, you might also have gotten in touch with interesting players!

This course is for 1st year MPP students only.
