Team now moves to global rounds of 2022 Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.
The Hertie School Moot Court Team successfully defended their national title as German champions of the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition on 24-26 February 2022. Claiming the trophy for the second year in a row, the team also took home the Best Combined Memorial award for international legal memorial writing. The online event was organised this year by Heidelberg University.
Between 24 March and 10 April, the team will represent Germany along with the University of Münster, Bucerius Law School and Ruhr-Universität Bochum in the international rounds, which are based in Washington, D.C., but will take place online this year.
This marks the fifth consecutive year that the Hertie School has been a finalist in the German national rounds of the Jessup competition, the world’s largest and most prestigious of its kind. Every year, students deal with a fictional dispute between two states under international law. This year’s topics were the admissibility of contested evidence into the proceedings of the International Court of Justice, the threat of misinformation in the context of elections, the right to freedom of expression and the legality of cyber-attacks.
Team members included Linn von Engelbrechten, Juri Wiedemann, Jessica Trollip, Malte Spielmann and Hashem Krayem, all second-year Hertie School students in the Master of Public Policy or Master of International Affairs programmes. They were coached by professors Mark Dawson and Pierre Thielbörger as well as research associates Theresa Bosl and Evgenija Kröker.
Juri Wiedemann received the Best Oralist Award Runner-Up in the preliminary rounds. “Having seen the variety of incredible performances of the different pleaders – their succinct, confident and eloquent display of knowledge – it is especially humbling to receive this award,” he said.
The team will now prepare for the White & Case International Rounds of the Jessup competition, where they will compete with national winners from up to 100 countries. “We’re very excited about the upcoming international rounds and can’t wait to compete,” said Hashem Krayem, the first Hertie School student to win back-to-back German championships.
Last year’s team reached the octo-finals of the White & Case rounds, placing it as the most successful European Union team in a field of nearly 600 teams from all over the world.
In 2023, the Hertie School will host the German national rounds of the Jessup competition.
