The Professor of Organisation, Strategy and Leadership joins international experts on an Advisory Board set up by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
A citizen initiative to reduce waste in the neighbourhood, campaigns to educate and interest young people in politics and civic engagement – social innovation has many faces and can take various forms. As part of the German National Strategy for Social Innovation and Enterprises for the Common Good, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has now set up an International Advisory Board for Social Innovation, which includes Hertie School Professor of Organisation, Strategy and Leadership Johanna Mair. The committee consists of 18 experts from business, science and civil society who will advise the BMBF on the implementation and further development of the strategy.
The board’s objective is to strengthen and promote social innovation in Germany and beyond and to grow the ecosystem from science and welfare to start-ups, industry and philanthropy and venture capital, considering local and international perspectives.
“I am excited to support Germany’s social innovation efforts by joining this great international group of experts. Together we will push the agenda on social innovation, helping to grow an ecosystem that enables our society to create and innovate in order to address the major challenges of tomorrow such as climate change or the future of democracy,” says Mair.
Federal Research Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger says:
"Social innovations are a natural part of a modern, future-proof, innovative country like Germany. We need creative and entrepreneurial solutions for the major challenges facing society. By setting up the Advisory Board for Social Innovation, we are now making use of the experience and knowledge of high-ranking international experts."
Background
In September, the Federal Cabinet adopted the National Strategy for Social Innovation and Enterprises for the Common Good. The establishment of an international advisory board to strengthen networking and visibility is one of around 70 measures. The advisory board supports the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Federal Government with expertise and suggestions. The advisory board is chaired by Zarah Bruhn, Commissioner for Social Innovation.
