Hertie School’s Centre for Fundamental Rights accepted as new a member of the Association of Human Rights Institutes

At their annual Assembly Meeting on 4 September 2020, AHRI members voted unanimously to accept the Hertie School’s Centre for Fundamental Rights as a member. The Centre joins more than 75 institutions from more than 30 countries that carry out research and education in the field of human rights across the globe. The objectives of the AHRI are to bring together human rights researchers from across the disciplines: to facilitate the exchange of ideas and collaboration and to promote research, education and discussion in the field of human rights. 

Co-directors of the Centre, Başak Çalı and Cathryn Costello, presented the Centre for Fundamental Rights, which celebrated on 1 September its first anniversary, to the AHRI Assembly. Co-Director Çalı shared with the Assembly the Centre’s strong interest in educating the next generation of human rights scholars, and building strong networks among them. ”We are excited to join the AHRI network in order to benefit from and contribute to exchanges between human rights research institutions about the present and future directions for human rights research” says Çalı.

AHRI’s Assembly met during this year’s AHRI annual conference that took place in a virtual format under the banner, “The Future of Human Rights: Socio-Economic Rights, Equality and Development” between 4-5 September and was hosted by the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria. The annual gathering provides member institutions and guests the opportunity to share and discuss current issues in human rights research and to coordinate and plan research through working groups. Next year’s conference is planned for August 2021 and will be hosted by the Maastricht Centre for Human Rights. A call for papers will be published in due course.
