Hertie School offers new, public-sector Integrated Professional Year

The Hertie School is launching a new, public sector Integrated Professional Year for the 2019/20 academic year. Prospective students may apply simultaneously for the Professional Year with their Master of International Affairs or Master of Public Policy application. Selected students with a strong interest in public service spend a full year working at the public sector consultancy PD (Partnerschaft Deutschland) between the first and second years of their master’s degree studies.

Students leave the school for 12 months to work at PD, with a guaranteed salary of 40,200 euros per year gross (3,350 euros per month). They then return to the Hertie School for their final year of studies.

Dean of Graduate Programmes Christine Reh says: "Combining the rigorous training on our master's programmes with applied experience in public sector consulting and management, the Integrated Professional Year is at the very core of our ambition as a Public Policy School. We are delighted to offer this opportunity to prospective students of public policy or international affairs!"

PD is a public, in-house consulting firm offering comprehensive project-based consulting and management services to the public sector. Its focus is on developing and implementing strategic administration and investment projects for German federal, state and local governments, and for other public sector clients. They aim to improve public procurement projects and management processes through a more efficient and economical use of public resources.

Applicants with a demonstrated interest in public sector consulting, public management and public sector reform processes who wish to pursue a degree in public policy or international affairs are welcome to apply. German C1-level language skills are required for the programme.

Interested candidates should submit a standard application to the Hertie School, along with a motivation letter specifically stating their interest in the Integrated Professional Year and what they find compelling about public sector consulting.

Once admitted to the master’s programme, potential applicants will be shortlisted by the Hertie School. PD will then select the participants, who will need to sign a contract with PD.

The 2019 final deadline for all both master's programmes is 1 May. There is no separate application form or separate deadline for the Integrated Professional Year.
