Why does the German army lack recruits?

Klaus Hurrelmann talks about missed opportunities for the army and for young people on Inforadio.

The German Parliament's armed forces commission revealed in a report  this week that, among numerous other problems, the Bundeswehr is having trouble recruiting young people. Klaus Hurrelmann, Professor of Public Health and Education, spoke on Germany's Inforadio about why the army is having trouble attracting recruits: "Young people, who have grown up in the digital age, are very good at researching. So when they are being misled about something - in terms of experience, work atmosphere, the chance to participate, transparency about working conditions - and all they have to do is look on the internet to find out this isn't true, then the Bundeswehr has already failed."
