In the FAZ, Johanna Mair says German business schools need to develop teaching on social entrepreneurship

Concepts for leading social businesses must be part of every study area – from finance to HR, she says.

With a boom in social startups, economic research on these institutions has increased, but business studies at German universities need to catch up, says Johanna Mair, Professor of Organization, Strategy and Leadership at the Hertie School. Concepts for running social businesses need to be part of every area of studies – whether finance, HR strategy or others, even though social businesses may not have the classic business goal of maximising profits, she says. “The system is too static,” Mair says in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. “I don’t want every student to become a social entrepreneur,” she says. “But at least they should have heard about it.”

In 2000, Johanna Mair was the first professor in Europe to teach Social Entrepreneurship. She continues to research and teach courses on the subject as part of her work on Organisational Management at the Hertie School.
