The Centre for International Security will welcome Prof. Saideman in February 2024 for a two-semester fellowship, supported by the Humboldt Research Award.
Nominated for the award by Centre Director and Professor of International Relations Prof. Marina Henke, Prof. Stephen Saideman is the Paterson Chair in International Affairs at Carleton University’s Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and the Director of the Canadian Defence and Security Network. He is the author of four books and has published extensively in prominent journals such as the Journal of Peace Research, European Journal of International Security, and International Studies Quarterly. His research explores the international relations of ethnic conflicts, multilateral military operations, and civil-military relations, with an overarching focus on how domestic political competition interacts with political institutions.
During his research fellowship at the Centre for International Security, Prof. Saideman will be developing the German case in a comparative project on the relationship between defence agencies and the armed forces in countries around the world. His research stay at the Centre will be split into two parts in spring 2024 and spring 2025. On 14 March 2024, Prof. Saideman will hold a public presentation about his research project at the Hertie School, hosted by the Centre for International Security. More details about this event will be shared at the start of the spring semester.
The prestigious Humboldt Research Award is awarded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. This highly competitive award is given to internationally recognised researchers nominated by established researchers at research institutions in Germany.
