“Okay, Boomer: what will the next generation of policymakers do differently?”

As part of the Hertie School’s 20th anniversary celebrations, the school is launching a student essay competition together with The Governance Post, the Hertie School’s student magazine. All students are encouraged to participate. 

Future policymakers to share their vision of the future

The Hertie School students of today will be the policymakers of tomorrow: they will work in international organisations, think tanks, NGOs and government affairs. This competition encourages them to think about the future of public policy, drawing from past and present experiences: 

How do the policymakers of tomorrow envision the world of public policy in 20 years? 
What will the policymakers of tomorrow do differently? 
What primary policy challenges need to be tackled – and how? 

This competition is open to all Hertie School students currently enrolled in the Master of Public Policy, Master of International Affairs, Master of Data Science for Public Policy and Executive Master of Public Administration programmes.

The winning essays will be selected by a jury representing different members of the Hertie School community including Dean of Graduate Programmes Thurid Hustedt, Professor of Ethics and Technology Joanna Bryson, Assistant Professor of International Relations Shubha Kamala Prasad, journalist and Hertie School alumnus Gabriel Rinaldi (MIA 2022), and Communications Director Benjamin Stappenbeck. 

Opportunity to get published – and win a cash prize

“This is a great opportunity for our students to express their thoughts on the lessons of the past and show us how they envision the world of tomorrow,” says Dean Thurid Hustedt, Chairwoman of the Jury.

“We are excited to see our student community involved in the Hertie School’s 20th anniversary celebrations,” says Puja Raghavan, Editor-in-Chief of The Governance Post. “This is an invaluable opportunity for us to reflect on what our generation will do differently than the last one.” 

The three winning essays will be rewarded with a prize of up to €500, in addition to being published both on the Hertie School website and in a special edition of The Governance Post. The author of the winning essay will also be recognised during the 20 Years of Hertie School celebrations.
