Michaela Kreyenfeld compares family policies

Low German birth rate not due to cultural reasons, but immediate result of lacking public child care.

Why do Belgian families have more children than German families? Is it because of a German “culture of few children”? A study by Michaela Kreyenfeld shows for the first time that the reason can be found in family policy and the availability of child care.

Read an Article by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung  (in German) about the study or find the German press release on the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research’s website.

The Hertie School will welcome Michaela Kreyenfeld as Professor of Sociology in February 2014. She is currently deputy head of the Laboratory of Economic and Social Demography at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock.
