Jobst Fiedler turns 70

Public management expert heads new research project about the debt brake.

Berlin, 7 February 2014 – Prof. Dr. Jobst Fiedler turns 70 years old today (7 February 2014). The expert for public management has been a faculty member of the Hertie School since 2004. As the School’s Associate Dean (until 2008), he was responsible for establishing the “Executive Master of Public Management” programme. After being conferred emeritus status at the end of 2013, Fiedler still works as Resident Senior Fellow at the Hertie School. Currently, he is heading the multi-year study ”Effects of the Debt Brake on Fiscal Governance and Strategies of Deficit Reduction in the German Federal States“.

Apart from his research, Jobst Fiedler’s career includes many years of service in politics, public administration, and business. He became known as a member of the “Hartz Commission“ in 2002. After studying law, economics, and political science and obtaining his PhD, Fiedler was a researcher at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center. Subsequently, he worked for the Hamburg city administration, where he held several executive positions. In 1990, Jobst Fiedler was elected Executive Mayor of Hanover. In 1996, he accepted a position at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, where he was responsible for public sector consulting. During his time as Professor for Public and Financial Management at the Hertie School, he was also visiting professor at Columbia University in New York and Getulio Vargas Business School, Sao Paulo, among others.
