Cornelia Woll inducted into Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities

The prestigious research academy welcomed the Hertie School President to its exclusive membership based on her work on the international political economy.

Hertie School President Cornelia Woll has been officially inducted into the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW), one of the most prominent scientific academies in Germany. She received the honour at the academy’s annual Leibniz day event, at which the BBAW announces its new members.

“I am honoured to join many outstanding colleagues at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities,” said Woll. “As a newly elected member, I look forward to advancing the academy’s mission to support research and promote dialogue between science and society.”

Woll was elected as a new member of the academy based on her scientific excellence in international political economy and her leadership in the academic landscape in both Germany and France. Her research centres on the politics of the economy, with a particular focus on business-government relations in the European Union and the United States. She has published on lobbying, economic and financial regulation, bank bailout and the evolution of corporate criminal law.

Woll joined the Hertie School as President in 2022. Previously she had served in different leadership capacities at Sciences Po Paris, including the directorship of a Franco-German research centre founded jointly with the Max Planck Society. In 2022, she was also elected to the Academia Europea, a pan-European academy of the humanities and sciences.

With around 400 elected members, the BBAW is the largest academic organisation for the sciences and humanities in the region of Berlin-Brandenburg. In addition to the promotion of cross-disciplinary activities and investments in long-term projects, the academy also acts as an advisor in society and politics and observes both individual disciplines and scholarly research as a whole.

New members to the BBAW are elected by the academy’s active members. Membership is offered to scholars both in Germany and abroad who have made outstanding contributions to research in their field. Michaela Kreyenfeld, Professor of Sociology at the Hertie School, was elected to the academy in 2019 in recognition of her achievements in demography and family sociology.
