Call for applications: Travel stipends to London for Hertie School Alumni

• Funds from the DAAD allow us to provide stipends for 10 international alumni
• The Hertie School will provide 5 extra stipends for German alumni and international alumni residing in Germany

Stipends cover the costs for flights and food for the time of the workshop. Please note that stipends do not cover full accommodation. The Hertie School can support alumni with up to 100 € for accommodation (reimbursement with valid receipts).

The workshop “Public Trust in Governments, Policy Makers and Experts” will ask how we can strengthen public institutions, which are under siege from new forms of media, populist ideologies and a citizenry that is nervous about a rapidly changing and unknown future. From an unease over the changing nature of work, resentment over immigration, housing shortages, and social services that are under strain, western democracies across the globe have growing populations that feel globalization, internationalization, is not cascading the benefits that they were promised. Recent elections and referendums have exposed many of these same underlying challenges and the underlying mistrust that public institutions, governments and politicians will solve them. How to build resilience and respond to attempts to discredit evidence and how to re-engage in political discourse in an environment that is so poisoned by discussions focused on difference, are topics that this workshop will explore. The workshop will bring together keynotes from alumni who work as practitioners in the field as well as academics, discussions and potentially excursions to relevant institutions.

Selection criteria:

• Funding for 5 alumni from DAC countries and 5 from non-DAC countries (only non-German Hertie School Alumni, living outside of Germany)
• Funding for 5 German alumni/ international alumni living in Germany
• Gender balance
• Relevant experience in transition processes
• Motivation to support the international alumni network
• Priority will be given to alumni who are willing to offer internships, professional year positions or master thesis projects to current students. Please indicate so in your letter

The workshop is organised by the Hertie School’s London Chapter (Jen Beckermann and Julia Kowalski), the Alumni Relations Team (Maria Bramer and Anna von Behr). The Managing Director, Axel Baisch, and our new President, Henrik Enderlein, will also join the discussion; both are looking forward to meeting and hearing from our alumni community.
