“Seizing the moment for euro area reform”

Henrik Enderlein co-authors new paper in light of Emmanuel Macron’s election victory in France.

Emmanuel Macron’s election as president in France breathed new life into the European project. At the heart of European integration is the euro, which is in need of major reforms, according to a new paper outlining workable reform of the euro, co-authored by Henrik Enderlein, Vice-President and Professor of Political Economy at the Hertie School as well as Director of the Jacques Delors Institut – Berlin. It is published by the Jacques Delors Institute, along with colleagues Enrico Letta (Jacques Delors Institute in Paris) and Aart De Geus (Bertelsmann Stiftung). The authors seek a strong single currency and want to bring back growth to the euro area. They fear that the European Monetary Union has made too few reforms in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis and would be unable to sustain a future crisis. The reforms proposed in this paper are more comprehensive than the post-2008 effort, in the hopes that structural reforms can be made, which will allow the euro to better handle future crisis.
