Are you interested in human rights issues? Do you wish to know more about how your studies can shape human rights debates? Are you at the beginning of a master thesis that relates to human rights?
Join us for the first session of the Human Rights Thesis Talks Series organised by the Student Advisory Board of the Centre for Fundamental Rights.
To this first talk, four Hertie School Alumna, who have written their outstanding master theses on a human rights-related topic, will share their experience. They will present three different theses, each followed by student questions. We will conclude the evening with a conversation between the presenters and the students on the high points and difficulties of writing a human rights related master thesis, and how it influenced their professional choices afterwards.
This initiative aims to support current students interested in human rights topics in their research processes, as well as to give visibility to the human rights research conducted by Hertie Alumni in the past. We hope to also show how human rights can be researched through a variety of methods and theoretical approaches and inspire current students to engage with human rights debates.
Speakers
Yasmina Alaoui (MIA-Alumna 2021): Yasmina wrote her thesis on 'Human rights due diligence and Germany’s role in the business and human rights domain in a European Context'. She is currently an Intern at the German Global Compact Network via the GIZ.
Kristina Hatas (MIA-Alumna 2020): Kristina wrote her thesis on the 'Advancement of gender equality through transitional justice in Sweden’s feminist foreign policy'. She stayed with the Hertie School as a research associate coaching the Hertie International Law Moot Court Team and after a year as a policy and international affairs officer at the German Informatics Society, Kristina joined Amnesty International as a Human Rights Expert.
Azucena Moran (MIA 2018): Azucena co-wrote her thesis together with Cristina Ciordia on the issue of 'Reconciliation and the prospects for an accountable amnesty in Venezuela'. She now works as a research associate at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) and is a PhD-candidate at the University of Potsdam.
Cristina Ciordia (MIA 2018): Cristina co-wrote her thesis together wirth Azucena Moran on the issue of 'Reconciliation and the prospects for an accountable amnesty in Venezuela'. After graduation she worked as an associate at the knowledge sharing platform Atheum before becoming a freelance research and communication consultant.
Conveners
Marina Luna joined Hertie School for the MPP in 2020. Her main topics of interests are migration, human rights and social policy. Marina worked as a policy advisor with integration policies for immigrants in the Human Rights Office at São Paulo City Hall. She previoulsy worked with international advocacy for human rights in civil society organizations and in the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights. Marina holds a bachelor in International Relations from the University of São Paulo.
Malte Spielmann joined Hertie for a MPP in September 2020. His personal research interests are the role of law in authoritarian systems, the European human rights regime, and the intersections of jurisprudence and critical theories. He is passionate about public policies that are not just in conformity with but actually guided by human rights norms.
