In op-ed for Project Syndicate, Helmut K. Anheier sees need for a German National Security Council

Institution could foster coherence and acceptance of security policies, the Professor of Sociology says.

Anheier advocates for the establishment of a National Security Council in Germany. Germany’s hesitant response to the war in Ukraine and the absence of public debate on security issues created a political vacuum and a paralysing sense of helplessness, he comments. A National Security Council comprising representatives from politics, business and civil society, however, “could advance a coherent defense, security, and foreign-policy strategy” and overcome past and current failures.
