República.org and the Hertie School expand strategic partnership to train future leaders in Brazil

República.org and the Hertie School have announced a new five-year partnership, focused on training and developing the next generation of leaders in Brazil’s public administration.

“I am really excited by the connection we are building with Hertie. In a short time, they have taken a leading role in continental Europe in the public policy area and have become a hub of expertise,” said Eloy Oliveira, Member of the Board of República.org. “We have a great commitment to excellence in public service. Now our partnership is stronger and includes customised courses, joint research and exchange of researchers”.

Acknowledging that capable leaders are key to successful policy implementation at all levels of government, activities will focus on the theme of strategic human resources management. The new partnership is based on continued bilateral exchange, a commitment to cooperate on joint research endeavours, and will provide scholarship opportunities for Brazilian students to study here in Berlin. Opportunities for scholars to travel to Brazil and to Berlin is also envisaged.

One of the first activities of the multi-faceted partnership was the launch of a new certificate in “Strategic Human Recourses Management”. Between 24 May and 11 June, forty-nine public sector leaders from Brazil engaged in a hands-on training programme.

“I am thrilled to expand and deepen the relationship we have with the República team,” said Mark Hallerberg, Acting President of the Hertie School. “The aim is to equip public servants with the skills they need to recruit, retain, and lead teams in times of increasing uncertainty and complexity – enabling them to tackle issues at both the local and global level.”

Speaking about the new partnership, Ambassador of Germany to Brazil, Heiko Thoms, added his support for this expanded collaboration. “The cooperation between the Hertie School in Germany and República.org in Brazil will make a significant contribution to good governance and a sustainable future. I am looking forward to seeing the impact that these two renowned organisations will have together!”

The Brazilian Ambassador to Germany, Roberto Jaguaribe Gomes de Mattos, echoed these words of support, “The excellence of public service is not only a requirement for the better functioning of state institutions and for the continuous improvement of public governance and democracy, it is also fundamental as an aggregating factor of the nation. The development of the civil servant is a necessary enabling element for this purpose and, in the same way, it is the best training of institutions dedicated to this goal. The partnership between the Instituto República and the Hertie School in Berlin, two institutions dedicated to this purpose, strengthens this process and also the traditional understanding and cooperation between Brazil and Germany."

Since 2019, more than thirteen students from Brazil have pursued graduate degrees at the Hertie School through the generous support of Republica’s Scholarship for Public Servants. For the Academic Year 2021-2022, the Hertie School welcomed three new scholarship holders for our Master of Public Policy programme.
