President Cornelia Woll greets 280 new students, two new professors and two new centre directors.
“Happy birthday, tanti auguri, joeux anniversaire, alles Gute zum Geburtstag” – for the Hertie School, the 2023-2024 academic year is starting off with birthday greetings from around the world. Why? The Berlin university is celebrating its 20th anniversary. To kick off the year, President Cornelia Woll greeted the school’s faculty of 35 professors, 280 new students and many of the school’s staff at a panel discussion. At the event, President Woll discussed the university’s development and research on public policy together with former Hertie School presidents Michael Zürn and Helmut Anheier and Anne-Marie Slaughter, academic and former adviser to Hillary Clinton.
"20 years of academic research and teaching on modern governance at the interface of politics, business and civil society – that is what the Hertie School stands for like no other university in Germany," says President Woll. "In 20 years, the Hertie School has become one of the most renowned international universities for social sciences.
New professors strengthen expertise in data science and sustainability
This semester, the Hertie School greets 280 new students and 12 new PhD researchers.
The university also welcomes two new professors who in the course of the academic year will strengthen its research and teaching in modern data analysis: Asya Magazinnik, Professor of Social Data Science, and Drew Dimmery, Professor of Data Science for the Common Good. Both scholars will bring their expertise to the school’s Data Science Lab and to the Master of Data Science for Public Policy. This programme, introduced two years ago, is the newest of the Hertie School’s four master’s programmes.
The new academic year also brings changes in leadership to two of the school’s centres of competence. Beginning this semester, Daniela Stockmann, Professor of Digital Governance, is the new Director of the Centre for Digital Governance. At the Jacques Delors Centre, Mark Dawson, Professor of European Law and Governance, now leads the centre’s academic activities as Co-Director. Johannes Lindner will continue to lead the Jacques Delors Centre’s think tank work as Co-Director. The former directors of the two centres, Gerhard Hammerschmid and Markus Jachtenfuchs, will both remain professors at the Hertie School.
Anniversary programme dedicated to global challenges
To celebrate its anniversary, the Hertie School invites the public to its campus for a series of events centring on the global challenges of our times. From climate change and democracy to security policy, the series of events will bring together academics, politicians and civil society. Other events in the programme include a concluding conference, the “High Level Forum”, a fundraising campaign for the school’s new campus on Dorotheenstraße, an Alumni Month in November 2023 for the school’s approximately 2,500 alumni worldwide, and an essay competition for students.
