A special issue of Global Policy brings together contributions from the Dahrendorf Symposium 2016.
In May 2016, the Dahrendorf Symposium convened in Berlin to tackle the timely topic of “Europe and the world: Global insecurity and power shifts”. Contributions made to this discussion have been compiled into a special edition of Global Policy, an interdisciplinary journal based at Durham University in the UK.
This special issue -- aptly titled “Europe and the world: Global insecurity and power shifts” – addresses the challenges facing the European Project. These challenges include changing demographics, high unemployment, lack of technological innovation, to name a few. It examines global political and economic transformations in an era of power shifts, the effects of economic globalisation and challenges to the democratic system, specifically populism, illiberalism and radicalism.
It is guest edited by Helmut K. Anheier, President of the Hertie School and Professor of Sociology, and Robert Falkner, Associate Professor of International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Their introductory remarks can be read here.
The Hertie School’s Wolfgang Ischinger, Senior Professor for Security Policy and Diplomatic Practice, and Tobias Bunde, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Centre for International Security Policy (CISP), also contribute a joint commentary: “European security policy at the end of the post-Cold War era”. The Dahrendorf Forum – Debating Europe is an initiative that promotes interdisciplinary European debate about key issues in society. The Dahrendorf Symposium is a high-profile event aimed at debating Europe’s future. It takes place every two years and is attended by about 300 participants including academics, European policy-makers, foreign policy experts, students and media representatives.
The Dahrendorf Symposium 2016 Europe and the World – Global Insecurity & Power Shifts was held at the Akademie der Künste, Pariser Platz, Berlin, from 25–27 May 2016.
