Teacher training needs a shock of theory, writes MDS student Johanna Mehler in ZEIT ONLINE

Mehler and co-authors argue for more learning centres where research meets practical methods and pedagogical innovation.

New formats for exchange are needed to combine teachers’ practical training with the latest pedagogical theories and methods, argues current Master of Data Science for Public Policy student Johanna Mehler in a ZEIT ONLINE op-ed published on 21 November 2022. Mehler co-authored the article with Felise Maennig-Fortmann, Consultant at the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, and Jan Wöpking, Managing Director of the German U15 Universities.

According to the authors, learning centres in schools are one possible format where new and experienced teachers, as well as pedagogical researchers and teachers in training, would have the opportunity to interact and learn from each other. These centres are already a feature of new experimental schools affiliated with universities in big cities that offer teacher training programmes. Expanding them to regular schools could help boost the attractiveness of teaching professions and contribute to training 800,000 teachers in Germany, the authors write.
