EU funds new European university alliance CIVICA.
Berlin, 26 June 2019 – The European Commission has chosen to fund the university alliance CIVICA, founded by the Hertie School in Berlin and six other institutions from France, Hungary, Italy, Romania and Sweden. The EU selected a total of seventeen “European Universities”, networks that will receive support of five million euros each in a three-year pilot phase, EU Education Commissioner Tibor Navracsics announced today. The aim is to promote the emergence of a European educational area.
Hertie School President Henrik Enderlein said: "Fifteen years after the founding of the Hertie School, we have been selected through CIVICA as a role model in the European Universities Initiative. This is an important milestone in our history. We are proud to be part of this European network of top universities that reflects the Hertie School’s own mission: Through excellence in teaching, research and outreach, to prepare the next generation of policymakers to be actively engaged for the common good in Europe.”
Together with Bocconi University (Italy), Central European University (Hungary), the European University Institute, the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration (Romania), Sciences Po (France) and the Stockholm School of Economics (Sweden), the Hertie School has developed a European university for the social sciences.
As a European inter-university campus with a broad scope, CIVICA aims to combine study, teaching and research in the fields of social sciences, humanities, political sciences and business administration across cultural, linguistic and national borders. The alliance brings together 38,000 students, 7,000 scientists and over 3,000 administrative staff. The seven CIVICA universities have also established a close partnership with the London School of Economics and Political Science.
CIVICA aims to establish a physically and digitally connected campus, and will encompass work at bachelor's, master's and PhD levels. The partners have identified four core areas of focus: challenges for democracy in the 21st century, social change related to global crises, the future of Europe, and data-based methods in the social sciences.
