Berlin, 06.04.2016 – Prof. Dr. h.c. Wolfgang Ischinger celebrates his 70th birthday today. In 2015 the chairman of the Munich Security Conference joined the Hertie School’s faculty as Professor for Security Policy and Diplomatic Practice.
Wolfgang Ischinger’s diplomatic career started in 1973 at the United Nations in New York. As leader of the German Federal Foreign Office’s political unit he led, among others, the German delegation at the Bosnian peace negotiations. In 1998 he was appointed as the Federal Foreign Office’s Secretary of State. He was sent to Washington as German Ambassador in 2001 and five years later he took over as Ambassador in London. He has been at the helm of the Munich Security Conference since 2008.
Wolfgang Ischinger studied law at the universities of Bonn and Geneva. He also studied international law, foreign economic relations and history at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and at Harvard Law School. Before he joined the Hertie School he was an Adjunct Professor in the Political Science Department of the University of Tübingen from 2010.
