In wide-ranging TV interview, Andrea Römmele assesses new era of German politics

Recorded on a Munich streetcar, the interview aired on public broadcaster BR.

One night, one talk and a tram. With the recent change of Germany’s government, Andrea Römmele, Professor of Communication in Politics and Civil Society at the Hertie School, discusses German domestic and foreign policy in a wide-ranging talk on Bavarian public broadcaster BR.

The discussion between Römmele and host Andreas Bönte took place on a moving streetcar at night in the city of Munich. They discuss party politics within the newly formed Social Democrat-led coalition, a potentially new style in foreign policy, and the renewal process of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the former Chancellor Party.

“During the election campaign, current chancellor Olaf Scholz said he wants to be a doer who pushes things forward,” Römmele says. However, his actions still resemble those of an “Angela Merkel 2.0”, copying the reactive style of his predecessor, she says.
