In (inter)national media, Cornelia Woll comments on French elections

Despite clear victory, Macron now needs to include those who fear being left behind.

On 24 April 2022, France voted Emmanuel Macron into his second term as President of France. Before and after the elections, Hertie School President Cornelia Woll commented on France’s prospects in several media outlets, including broadcasters and newspapers SRF, France24Deutsche Welle, HandelsblattZDF, WDR, ntv, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, La libre belgique and many more.

"Regardless of Macron's clear victory, the fact that Le Pen received 42% of votes – and in some districts even more – definitely says something about the current mood in France," the Professor of International Political Economy said on German TV show ZDF Mittagsmagazin. In the upcoming parliamentary elections, the cards will be shuffled anew, she said. "In order to win a lot of seats, Macron now needs to shed his neoliberal image and address the problems of French citizens who feel politically apathetic or economically left behind."
