Hertie School to host German National Rounds for 2023 Philip C. Jessup Moot Court international law competition

130 students from universities across Germany will compete in Berlin.

From 1-4 March 2023, the Hertie School will welcome 17 teams of 130 students from universities across Germany, as well as 54 judges, to its campus in Berlin for the German National Rounds of the 2023 Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition – the first in-person competition since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Each year, students from law schools and eligible universities compete in the world’s biggest and most prestigious international moot court competition by dealing with a fictional dispute between two states under international law. This year’s case concerns an international peace treaty, an allegedly occupied territory after a war over raw materials, terrorism, sanctions, and environmental protection and regulation. The teams have all prepared arguments for both sides of the case.

This year’s Hertie School team comprises Robyn Liza Titulski, Johannes Maria Halkenhaeusser, Dominik Robin Cramer, Rianne Desirée `t Jong and Olivia Aitken, all second-year students in the Master of Public Policy, Master of International Affairs or Master of Data Science for Public Policy programmes. The Hertie School team is the two-time reigning champion of the German National Rounds and was the most successful team from an EU university in 2022.

The winners of the German National Rounds will advance to the global stage for the White & Case International Rounds, which will be held in person in Washington, DC. Every year, the Jessup Competition draws participants from around 700 schools around the world. The 2023 competition is presented by law firm Jones Day and organized by Vincent Widdig and professors of the Hertie School Mark Dawson and Pierre Thielbörger. The International Law Students Association (ILSA) coordinates the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition annually.
