A public discussion on current security policy challenges marks the centre’s official launch (5 Oct).
Berlin, 5 October 2016 – The new Centre for International Security Policy at the Hertie School (CISP) under the leadership of Professor Wolfgang Ischinger starts its work today (5 October). The CISP will be dedicated to research and serve as a space for public security policy debates. Its partnership with the Munich Security Conference (MSC) will foster networking among security policy actors in Germany and abroad. The centre will contribute to the Munich Security Report, published annually in conjunction with the MSC.
The Hertie School will continue to expand the CISP’s research capacity. At the beginning of September Julian Wucherpfennig was appointed Assistant Professor of International Affairs and Security. This professorship was made possible by the Friede Springer Foundation. In the coming months, CISP’s work will especially focus on cyber security. In addition, research will focus on international terrorism, security policy cooperation in the framework of the EU and NATO, and the future European security architecture.
“Despite substantial security policy challenges, there remains a surprising dearth of opportunities for teaching, researching and learning about it at German universities. With CISP we also want to offer a platform for ongoing exchange between research and practice,” explains Wolfgang Ischinger, who has chaired the Munich Security Conference since 2008.

The immense demand for research and training in this field is confirmed by the high interest in the Master of International Affairs we’ve been offering since 2015. The establishment of the CISP is the logical next step for us.”
