Hertie School and Bucerius Law School join forces for Law and Politics certificate

The universities will train legal students in customised political course offer.

Berlin, 17 January 2024. Be it conflicts between states, the climate crisis or the impact and regulation of artificial intelligence – some of the most challenging questions of our future link political action with legal issues. Classic law curricula do not always address the political implications of legal questions thoroughly. To close this gap, the Hertie School joins forces with Hamburg-based Bucerius Law School in 2024. With recognised experts on public policy, the Hertie School will train legal students from Bucerius Law School in a political certificate named “Law and Politics” (“Recht und Politik”). The certificate offers Bucerius Law School students extended academic and practice-oriented teaching with Hertie School faculty members and policy experts over a period of two years. The seminars examine central political science concepts at the German, European and international level, and a further seminar compares governmental and administrative systems. The certificate includes four courses in total.

“Today’s complex world needs interdisciplinary solutions to public policy questions,” says Hertie School President Cornelia Woll. “We are delighted to contribute to the studium generale of Bucerius Law School with our expertise in national governance, international relations, European and comparative politics.”

The seminars will be held by Hertie School Professors Thurid Hustedt and Kai Wegrich, experts on public administration and governance. The fields of international and European politics will be covered by policy experts Dr Markus Kaim and Dr Ronja Kempin. Adjunct Professor Cornelius Adebahr will offer seminars on politics and governance in Germany. Adebahr will also serve as the certificate programme’s director. Each of the four seminars covers 12 hours and includes exams and assignments.

"The Hertie School is an ideal partner for Bucerius Law School," says Bucerius Law School President Michael Grünberger. "Thanks to the outstanding academic and didactic expertise of their impressive staff and access to their network of policy experts, the knowledge imparted to our students is highly topical and practice-oriented." Alexa Meyer-Hamme, head of the studium generale at Bucerius Law School, adds: "With the new certificate, we can offer our students an attractive, tailor-made program at the interface of law and politics, which will prepare them even better for their future as decision-makers in Europe and beyond."
