Andrea Römmele on Afghanistan and the German election

Professor of Communication in Politics and Civil Society on what consequences the Afghan crisis will have for the 2021 federal election.

With the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan and an expected outflow of evacuees and refugees, migration has again become a topic of discussion in German politics.

In an interview with German broadcaster ZDF, Dean of Executive Education and Professor of Communication in Politics and Civil Society Andrea Römmele commented on CDU chancellery candidate Armin Laschet's pronouncement that "2015 must not be repeated", a reference to Germany's welcoming stance to a large number of Middle Eastern migrants in 2015.

Römmele noted that how COVID-19, Afghanistan and other developments will affect the upcoming German federal election is still unclear.

"We have so many unforeseen issues: Corona, the flood and now Afghanistan – that is extraordinary. I have no idea how [the election] will turn out in five weeks," Römmele said on the program.
