German Language Support programme

Mastering the German language can help smooth your integration into Berlin and significantly broaden your employment opportunities across Germany. To aid you in this journey, we are introducing the Hertie School German Language Support programme. Learn more about the prerequisites and the process for obtaining your B1 level reimbursement:

1. Start learning German online at a discounted rate before arriving in Berlin

For students who want to start their German learning before arriving in Berlin, an online German class can be a great option to gain some proficiency before the Fall Semester starts! We have partnered with the Goethe-Institute Germany to offer incoming Hertie students their online courses at a discounted rate. Check out this Moodle page for more information about Goethe-Institut Germany and a discount code

2.  Attend Hertie's intensive beginner-level German language course

As an incoming student you can attend an intensive beginner-level German language course at the Hertie School prior to Welcome Week (from 21-25 Aug, registration required).

3. Discover resources on Moodle

Moodle is out internal platform where students can find information about campus life and resources offered by the school. Once you become a Hertie student, you can use Moodle to find an appropriate German language school in the city in order to continue studying German independently.

4. Get reimbursed for your B1 course during your first year at Hertie

All MPPMIA and MDS students can apply for a B1 course reimbursement. Hertie will reimburse the costs for one German B1 course and one B1 examination per student. The offer is valid for the entire master’s degree, and students in their PY Year are also eligible for the reimbursement. Please note that:

  • You must submit a certificate of completion of the course alongside the passed B1 proficiency test to Student Life to get the course fee reimbursed.
  • Should you not obtain the certificate or drop out, you would not get reimbursed and must cover the costs of the course and exam yourself.
  • Only courses from the following schools will be reimbursed: Carl DuisbergKapitel ZweiExpathSpeakeasyGLS Sprachenzentrum.
  • Exchange students and PhD students are not eligible to receive this reimbursement.
