Join guest speaker Julia Braunmiller, current Senior Gender and International Development Specialist with the World Bank Group, Prof. Ruth Ditlmann and Prof. Shubha Kamala Prasad for a Policy & Pizza session discussing the Women, Business and the Law project, which produces a unique annual dataset on the laws and regulations that affect women’s economic opportunity across 190 countries. Ms. Braunmiller leads teams for the collection and analysis of primary data on comparative family law, access to property and finance, the inclusion of sexual and gender minorities, and the rights of women with disabilities. She also devises strategies and conducts trainings on the use of this data to inform World Bank operations geared toward legal and policy reform. Bring your questions!

The event is public and will be hosted at the Forum of the Hertie School in Berlin. There will be no live stream. Due to limited seating, registration is appreciated. Speakers

Julia C. Braunmiller

  • Julia Constanze Braunmiller is a Senior Gender and International Development Specialist with the World Bank Group’s Women, Business and the Law project, which produces a unique annual dataset on the laws and regulations that affect women’s economic opportunity across 190 countries. Ms. Braunmiller leads teams for the collection and analysis of primary data on comparative family law, access to property and finance, the inclusion of sexual and gender minorities, and the rights of women with disabilities. She also devises strategies and conducts trainings on the use of this data to inform World Bank operations geared toward legal and policy reform. Previously, she taught international human rights law at the Johns Hopkins University and directed programs on combating human trafficking and promoting clinical legal education throughout the Middle East and North Africa. 

Prof. Ruth Ditlmann, PhD

  • Ruth Ditlmann is Professor of Psychology and Public Policy at the Hertie School. Her research focuses on intergroup contact and intergroup interaction, the potential and limitations of interventions based on social psychological theories to promote integration and to build peace in field-settings, and the psychology of national identity. She is also interested in how behavioural insights can responsibly inform policymaking.

    Previously, she was a Research Fellow at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin in the Migration, Integration and Transnationalization Department and a Postdoctoral Fellow at Princeton University in the Department of Psychology and Social Policy. She received her PhD from Yale University in 2012 and was a Research Affiliate at Columbia University. She has authored publications in leading journals in social psychology and is the recipient of a Lichtenberg Professorship awarded by the VW foundation. She also has gained non-academic experience working as an impact analyst for PHINEO gAG.

Prof. Shubha Kamala Prasad, PhD

  • Shubha Kamala Prasad is an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the Hertie School. Her research examines domestic sources of foreign policy, spanning substate conflict to diaspora mobilization. She was a Max Weber Postdoctoral Fellow at the European University Institute (2020-22), Fiesole, Italy. Shubha was awarded her PhD in Political Science in 2020 from the Department of Government, Georgetown University, Washington, DC, USA. She completed her MPhil and MA in International Politics at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. Her prior work experience also includes organizing Track II Dialogues between India and Pakistan.
