HNoD Movie Night: The Social Dilemma

Join the Hertie Network on Digitalization for a virtual movie night and discussion

The Hertie Network on Digitalization will be hosting a Movie Night on Monday, 30 November at 7 pm (CET) – and you can join in right from your home!

We will be watching The Social Dilemma, a recently released documentary on Netflix that explores the many ways social media has damaged our society and exploited individual users. The film features interviews with former employees of various tech and social media companies (as well as interviews with experts in the field).

"We tweet, we like, and we share— but what are the consequences of our growing dependence on social media? As digital platforms increasingly become a lifeline to stay connected, Silicon Valley insiders reveal how social media is reprogramming civilization by exposing what’s hiding on the other side of your screen."
- Official film synopsis

After the movie, we'll host a 30-minute open discussion via video conference, giving everyone a chance to reflect on the film and its content (including discussing some of the film's shortcomings). We'll be joined in this discussion by Rafael Goldzweig (Hertie School MPP 2017). Rafael works for Democracy Reporting International as a research coordinator, where he focuses on the impact of social media on democracy and democratic discourse.
