Fighting corruption in Brazil: lessons and challenges

Exclusive student discussion with Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal (Getulio Vargas Foundation), moderated by Mark Hallerberg (Hertie School).

For years, Brazil has been embroiled in scandals reaching the highest levels of government and business. Public demands for investigations into corruption continue, and Brazilians are eager for their economy to get back on track. Politicians are as well, considering general elections next year. To some, Brazilian governance deserves much criticism for the degree of corruption exposed thus far. On the other hand, successful investigations into said corruption highlight an important and functioning pillar of governance.

Opportunities for students to learn from the Brazilian case, and for public policy schools and their graduates to potentially make impact in such challenging landscapes, will be one of the topics of discussion with Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal, President of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), an educational institution of excellence based in Brazil. Mark Hallerberg, Dean and Professor of Public Management and Political Economy at the Hertie School, will moderate the discussion.

Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal is President of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV). From 1992 to 2000, he held a number of positions at FGV, including Vice President, Director of the Faculty of Economics, and Director of FVG Business. He joined FGV as a professor in the Faculty of Economics in 1986. Dr. Leal studied civil engineering at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and business mathematics at Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientí fico e Tecnolo gico (CNPq). He earned his doctorate in economics from Princeton University, USA in 1986.

The Hertie School is proud to call the Escola de Administração da Fundação Getulio Vargas in Sao Paolo an academic exchange partner, offering MPP students study abroad opportunities during their third semester. Students will have the opportunity to find out more about the programme in this exclusive discussion with Dr. Leal.
