Speakers

Salvador Parrado

  • Salvador Parrado teaches public management and public administration at the Spanish Distance Learning University (UNED) in Madrid and has been a member of the Associate Faculty at the Hertie School since 2009. He has written several reports for international organisations like OECD, SIGMA, UNDP, World Bank, IABD, CEMR, European Commission and national governments like Brazil, Chile, France, Mexico, Norway, Peru, Serbia Turkey and Spain on different public management topics. At present, he is director of Governance International (www.govint.org) and has been Associate Editor of Public Administration. His current academic research focuses on the enforcement of and compliance with COVID-19 measures and the supply and demand of policies in the areas of health and education.

Prof. Joanna Bryson, PhD

  • Joanna Bryson is Professor of Ethics and Technology at the Hertie School. Her research focuses on the impact of technology on human cooperation, and AI/ICT governance. From 2002-19 she was on the Computer Science faculty at the University of Bath. She has also been affiliated with the Department of Psychology at Harvard University, the Department of Anthropology at the University of Oxford, the School of Social Sciences at the University of Mannheim and the Princeton Center for Information Technology Policy. During her PhD she observed the confusion generated by anthropomorphised AI, leading to her first AI ethics publication “Just Another Artifact” in 1998. In 2010, she co-authored the first national-level AI ethics policy, the UK's Principles of Robotics. She holds degrees in psychology and artificial intelligence from the University of Chicago (BA), the University of Edinburgh (MSc and MPhil), and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (PhD). Since July 2020, Prof. Bryson has been one of nine experts nominated by Germany to the Global Partnership for Artificial Intelligence.

Prof. Dr. Kai Wegrich

  • Kai Wegrich is Dean of Faculty and Research and Professor of Public Administration and Public Policy at the Hertie School. He is a political scientist with research interests in executive politics, regulation, public sector reform and innovations in policy-making. Wegrich has held positions at Humboldt University in Berlin, Potsdam University, the RAND Corporation and the London School of Economics. He is co-editor of the book series on Executive Politics and Governance (with Palgrave). He holds degrees from the Free University of Berlin and Potsdam University, where he earned his PhD in 2003.
