Data Science Brown Bag Series: Polarisation and social media in Ukraine: a Measurement Quandry

Join us for a talk by Małgorzata Zachara-Szymańska on the role of digital governance in Ukraine during the time of war. This is part of the Data Science Brown Bag series.

Abstract from the speaker:

The determination of the Ukrainian people to fight Russian aggression has been commonly viewed as a sign of the country’s definitive identification with democratic ideas, expressed in political aspirations tojoin NATO and the EU. Yet Ukraine’s political reality in the pre-war period is known to be heavily marked by distrust, polarization, and corruption. The planned presentation will address the role of digital governance, which is seen here as a major platform of interaction between the authorities and Ukrainian citizens that enhances societal trust and cooperation in the time of war. The presentation touches upon the following issues:  a) Practical ways in which digital networks are used by the Ukrainian government to amplify the unifying effect of  “rallying around the flag” b) Measures and interpretations in the context of Ukraine’s war-time crisis management (what methodologies and data could be used to measure the impact of digital network initiatives on mitigating distrust of the government, polarization between social groups, and other problems that have impacted social, political, and economic development in Ukraine since independence in 1992?); Implications for the country’s social coherence and political stability in the future.
