Berlin de-colonial walking tour

The event is organised by the Student Advisory Board for the Centre for Fundamental Rights

The Student Advisory Board for the Centre for Fundamental Rights invites Hertie School students to join a walking tour through Berlin’s African Quarter (Afrikanische Viertel) to explore the city’s colonial past and the echoes of injustice that continue into the present.

Over the course of a two-hour tour led by Dekoloniale Stadführung, students would learn about the role Otto von Bismarck and the other European statesmen played in establishing the borders on the African continent, what protection contracts were, how human zoos functioned, how the crimes of the time could be justified with the help of racism and, more importantly, what needs to happen to stop legitimizing the colonial era.
