African bias and Asian exceptionalism? Civil conflicts and agenda-setting in the United Nations Security Council, 1946-2018.

A presentation by Evgenija Kröker (Nuffield College, University of Oxford). This event is part of the International Security Research Colloquium hosted by the Centre for International Security.

Evgenija Kröker will present her current research project which looks at civil conflicts and agenda-setting in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). More specifically, she asks why we see so few Asian civil conflicts discussed at the UNSC in contrast to a high number of African civil conflicts despite a similar distribution of conflicts between 1946-2018. In explaining this variation, she unpacks a frequently used yet rarely theorised factor: region. Her argument breaks it down into three explanatory variables, including the existence and interests of preponderant powers from within and outside of the region; the strategic use of international organizations like the UN by states from the region; as well as the design and membership of (in)formal regional organizations.
