The Hertie School and the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University offer a compelling dual-degree programme, merging Data Science for Public Policy (MDS) with a Master of Public Policy (MPP). 1 Year. The Hertie School, Berlin (MDS):
Participants will begin their studies at the Hertie School in the Master of Data Science for Public Policy programme. Throughout this year, students delve into the fundamentals of data science and public policy, exploring topics such as algorithmic decision-making and the transformative potential of artificial intelligence. At the Hertie School, students will have access to cutting-edge resources, including a state-of-the-art supercomputing tool for data science-based research, and a creative space equipped with the latest tools for collaboration and invention. Students will also benefit from the Data Science Lab's online learning resources, via which they will further enhance their technical and quantitative skills.
2 Year. Sanford School of Public Policy (MPP):
For the second year, students will enroll in the Master of Public Policy at the Sanford School. This programme is designed to cultivate ethical and inclusive leaders committed to solving public policy challenges and strengthening society through public service. Students will have the opportunity to choose from seven policy-area concentrations, spanning topics such as Environment & Energy, National Security, Health, and more. At Sanford, students will have the opportunity to refine their analytical skills. They will gain unique experience in bringing together data science and public policy insight to address complex societal issues.
Students are required to complete a full-time internship related to their concentration area, which typically occurs during the summer between the first and second years. Internships provide students with hands-on exposure to real-world issues, and are invaluable steppingstones to future career opportunities.
Tuition fees for this dual degree programme are determined by each institution for the respective years. The Hertie School sets the tuition for the first year in Berlin, and Sanford School of Public Policy sets the tuition for the second year. For the first year, the Hertie School offers need-based scholarships worth 25% of the tuition.
