Introducing the Master of Data Science for Public Policy – apply today!

Looking to combine your passion for data and policymaking? The MDS could be the right fit for you.

We’re happy to announce that you can now apply for the Master of Data Science for Public Policy (MDS) via our online application portal. Our newest two-year master’s degree is no ordinary data science programme. With a solutions-oriented approach and with the support of the Hertie School Data Science Lab, students will learn how to use data for responsible policymaking. Our first MDS cohort will begin their studies in fall 2021, and they’ll graduate with a competitive edge in an increasingly digital, data-driven job market.

Who can apply?

Just like for the MIA, MPP and Executive MPA programmes, you must be proficient in English and have completed a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in any discipline by 1 September 2021 to enrol in the MDS programme next fall. All candidates should have prior quantitative or technical training to apply.

What we look for

Because of the MDS degree’s technical focus, the evaluation criteria for admission are slightly different from our other programmes:

  • Academic excellence
This entails your academic suitability for the programme based on your grades/academic performance (transcripts, letters of reference).
  • Quantitative and technical ability
What do you bring to the table in terms of technical abilities? This could range from statistical or programming skills gained in university courses to participation in a coding camp or hackathon.
  • Personal suitability and motivation
What are your interests in policy, social/political issues and your overall experience with data science for public policy? Here’s your chance to convince us of what drives you to study this programme (in your CV, letter of motivation).
