EMPA priority deadline: Application tips

Are you ready to take your career to the next level? There’s no better time than the present to start your application for the Executive Master of Public Administration at the Hertie School in Berlin. The priority deadline is approaching on 1 June, so get started today. Before you do, here’s a few tips from the admissions and recruitment team.

Tip #1: Review the application requirements and materials

To apply for the Executive MPA, you’ll need to submit transcripts from all academic institutions you’ve attended and diplomas from completed undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. If your documents are in a language other than English, you’ll need to have them officially translated before submitting them.

Additionally, there is an English language proficiency requirement for admission to the Executive MPA. There are, however, exceptions, for example if you completed an entire degree in English or have worked for a significant amount of time in English. Proof of English proficiency can be submitted until 1 August.

We accept the following tests and scores for the Executive MPA programme:

  • TOEFL | PBT 577 | CBT 233 | iBT 90
  • IELTS | Overall score of 7.0
  • Cambridge ESOL | CPE (A, B, C) | CAE (A, B)
  • Duolingo | 115

Test results may not be more than five years old.

Tip #2: Reflect on your motivations for pursuing the programme and consider what you bring to the programme and the Hertie School

The primary requirement for students applying to the Executive master is having a minimum of three years professional working experience. Aside from that, we do not require that students have a certain academic or professional background. In doing so, we hope to encourage a diverse group of individuals to apply and enter the programme, enriching the experience for all.

What is it about the Hertie School that you believe will help you achieve your academic and professional goals? Spend some time articulating these ideas in your letter of motivation. It will also help us ensure that the programme is a good fit and that you will get what you are looking for out of it. When writing your letter of motivation, you might consider:

  • Why do you want to study at the Hertie School, and what are your expectations for the Executive MPA programme?
  • Where are you working now, and what does your professional trajectory look like?
  • How will the Executive MPA programme empower you to get where you want to be?
  • What skills and experiences will you bring to the classroom and to a tight-knit group of peers and professionals?

Tip #3: Examine all of your resources

If you’re still trying to articulate why it is that you’d like to complete the Executive MPA at the Hertie School, it might be helpful to evaluate all of the resources available on our website.

Finally, there’s no need to wait until the application deadline if you’re ready to submit your materials sooner. We are looking forward to receiving your application!
